A BRIEF HISTORY

The Hoff Theater, located on the University of Maryland campus, opened its doors in 1972 as part of the Stamp Student Union new renovation. In 1975, the theater was named after William Hoff, who had served as director of the Stamp, and boasted a seating capacity of 713. The theater was an on-campus hangout for students interested in seeing first and second-run films. In the late 1990s, the theater was moved to a temporary location in the Bio-Psych Building while the Stamp Student Union underwent a major expansion and renovation project. In the fall of 2002 the Theater once again opened its doors in the Stamp. This newly renovated theater now features a concession stand, Dolby Digital surround sound, and many other amenities found in most modern movie theaters. The new Hoff Theater yields a seating capacity of 550.

Examples of past Hoff Theater programs include: "The Vision of Jim Henson," which included a retrospective of the works of Jim and Jane Henson and ran from February - March 1997. In March 2006, the Hoff Theater held the premier screening of "Keeping the Promise: the Rise of University of Maryland," a documentary featuring the 150-year history of the University. In September 2007, the Hoff Theater was home to the World Premier Screening of "The Impaler." The Hoff has also been host to a number of co-sponsored guest speaker events such as, "An Evening with John Waters: Shock Values" (April 1995), "SEE Presents Mo Rocca" (September 2003), "An Evening with Anthony Rapp from RENT" (April 2006), and "An Evening with Spike Lee" (October 2006).
